Explore Porto on a budget

If you're planning a weekend getaway to Porto, but want to keep your budget low, here's an itinerary for you. Porto is a lively city, full of history, culture, and charming corners that can be explored without spending a lot of money. From free museums to affordable meals, here's an itinerary so you can make the most of your visit to the city.

Day 1

Cultural morning and breathtaking views

Start your day exploring the Palácio de Cristal Gardens, one of the most beautiful and serene places in Porto, with free admission. Stroll through the carefully tended gardens, enjoy the breathtaking views over the River Douro, and relax in its peaceful corners. It's the perfect time of year to stroll through this park and see the changing colors of the leaves. From here, head to the Galeria Municipal do Porto, which also has free entry during the week, and explore the contemporary art exhibitions.

Take advantage of the morning to visit the Guerra Junqueiro House-Museum, with free admission on Sundays. Located in a beautiful 18th-century house, this museum offers an interesting insight into the poet's life and a collection of decorative art that will transport you to another century.

Afternoon of discoveries and local flavors

For lunch, head to Casa Guedes Tradicional, famous for its delicious and affordable ham sandwiches. If you prefer something more traditional, Café Santiago is a great choice for trying Porto's iconic francesinha, without weighing down your pocket.

After lunch, take a stroll along Porto's Ribeira, one of the city's most characteristic and photogenic spots. Explore the narrow streets, discover the craft stores, and enjoy the entertainment of the street artists. Continue to the Serra do Pilar viewpoint for a spectacular panoramic view over the city and the river.

Day 2

Art and culture on a budget

On the second day of your weekend getaway, take the opportunity to visit the Museum of Natural History and Science at the University of Porto, which has free admission on Sunday mornings. This museum offers fascinating exhibitions that appeal to both adults and children, making it perfect for a family visit.

Then head to the Romantic Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha, another space with free admission on Sundays. This museum recreates 19th-century life and, in addition to the exhibitions, offers wonderful views over the Douro.

A relaxing afternoon and affordable snacks

End the day with a stroll through Porto City Park, the largest urban park in the country, where you can have a family picnic. If you prefer a more refreshing atmosphere, opt for Praia dos Ingleses, a small beach close to the center where you can relax and watch the sunset.

For dinner, don't miss Bufete Fase, known for its inexpensive francesinha, or try the petiscos at A Tasquinha, a typical restaurant with Portuguese dishes at very affordable prices.
